shalfleet

Tiny village on main Newport-Yarmouth road. Shalfleet quay, on the shores of Newtown creek, is popular for yachting and an attractive area for picnickers and walkers.

Nearby Newtown, one-time capital of the Island before French raiders made a habit of burning it down (it used to be called 'Francheville' for that reason) is even more attractive. The ancient 'Francheville Arms', closed many years ago, and is now owned by the National Trust.
