shanklin

Sandown's sister town is largely a pleasant Victorian seaside resort cantered on some attractive cliffs. The Old Village is of rather greater antiquity, and has adorned many a chocolate box. The Chine, reached from the Old Village, is an attractive tree-lined gorge, which leads down to the beach by Fisherman's Cottage, still may be seen remains of PLUTO, the “pipeline under the ocean” through which petrol was supplied to the troops after the Normandy Landings. The well-maintained Rylestone Gardens line one side of the Chine.

Walkers might like to take the footpath, which leads from Shanklin through the leafy Undercliff to that part of Luccombe Village, which hasn't slipped into the sea, and on to Ventnor. A steep, narrow ravine, the Devil's Chimney gives access to the Landslip Gardens.
